Access prior knowledge of students by introducing, reviewing or asking them to recall factors that led to the Great Migration of African Americans to the Northern states. Responses may include:
- Jim Crow Laws
- Structure/Failure of Tenant Farming/Sharecropping
- Racial Violence
- Economic Disparities and Opportunities
- Systemic Racism
Provide students with the Student Context handout and review the connection between factors leading to the Great Migration and Clarify any misconceptions and ensure understanding.
To pique students interest to close the lesson you could either
- Ask students to try to generate a list of African American artists they may already know that they may look forward to learning more about in this unit of study. OR
- Ask students to consider current artists that they know about that similarly “further understand questions of race, identity, and social change”
