To summarize and deepen their knowledge of the different leaders of the civil rights movements, students will make a series of encyclopedia entries, one per leader. To complete the encyclopedia entries, divide students into four groups–one for each leader (King, Malcolm X, Carmichael, Baker). Each encyclopedia entry should contain the following information:

  • What organization(s) and ideas are connected to that person
  • The methods each person used to create change
  • Actions each took, and notes on which actions were successful
  • Critiques of their leadership or work
  • Predictions on how each would respond to current events (such as the Black Lives Matter protests in response to the murder of George Floyd) and why

The next day, host a panel discussion. A group of students speaks as King’s publicists, a group as Baker’s spokespeople, etc. Some students are left out of the panel to function as reporters. Each panel

member gives a synopsis of his/her philosophy. The reporters write questions for the panel, which include questions about the panel’s reaction to various more recent incidents, and then write a brief article summarizing the discussion and explaining whose ideas they found most convincing and why.
