Place students into small groups of 3-4. Distribute one of the following selected photographs to each group.

As a group, have students answer the following questions about their photo:

  • List 10 observations about the photo.
  • What’s happening in the photo? Describe what story you think the photograph tells.
  • What are 2-3 things this photograph tells you about life at this time?
  • What does this photograph suggest about gender during the civil rights movement?
  • What questions do you still have about the photo?

Have a representative from each group share their answers with the full class. Then, have students write a 1-paragraph reflection in response to the following prompt:

  • From these photographs, how did gender and/or sexism impact the civil rights movement? Explain using evidence from at least 2 of the photos.
