In groups of 3-4, have students review the source “Panther Sisters on Women’s Liberation”–both the interview and the visual cartoon.
The group should discuss the following questions together:
- The flier contains an image in the center by Black Panther artist Emory Douglas. What does this image suggest about the role of women in the Black Panther Party? Link your answer to details from the cartoon.
- Summarize the challenges that women faced in the Black Panther Party, as described in the interview. In what ways are these similar to the challenges faced by women in the nonviolent civil rights movement?
- Why are women essential to the movement, according to the interview subjects?
- How do the interview subjects feel about white-led women’s organizations?
- How did gender and/or sexism impact the civil rights movement?
Then, have each group create a political cartoon contrasting the roles of women in the nonviolent civil rights movement and the Black power movement. Allow each group to share their cartoons with the class.
