Introduce students to the Pan-African Flag using the Pan African Flag handout.

Then identify 4 provided sources or alternative choices to display around the room  for a Gallery Walk. The sources should all incorporate the Pan-African flag. Introduce students to the prompts they will need to respond to on post-its, note paper or a graphic organizer of your choice during the walk.

  • Source (Author, Date, Title)
  • What details stand out as interesting or important in this source?
  • What do you notice? How was the flag utilized in this instance?
  • Why do you believe that the flag was utilized? How does the flag’s use serve as  a legacy of Marcus Garvey and the UNIA?

After students have completed the Gallery Walk, debrief, either as a whole class or in small groups. During the debrief students should respond to the original questions and then engage in a deeper discussion around one or more of the following questions:

  • How do you think the life and ideas of Marcus Garvey affect us today?
  • What is sticking with you from our study of Garvey?
  • What can/should we take away from our study of Garvey?  How could we apply this in our lives today?
